Exclusive Interview with Lewis Smart: Racing for Triumph

From humble beginnings to winning success, Lewis Smart’s rise in the world of motorsport is nothing short of remarkable.

Four years ago, racing wasn’t on Lewis radar in a serious way. Today, he’s a name to watch in British motorsport, fuelled by determination, hard work, and an unwavering passion for the track.

Lewis’s journey into racing began unexpectedly. Growing up, his father’s love for cars and bikes surrounded him, but Lewis hadn’t seriously considered racing himself. It wasn’t until he enrolled at Silverstone Motorsport College to study as a race technician that everything changed. There, he met a classmate who raced competitively, sparking an idea he couldn’t shake.

“I went home, spoke to my dad, and we decided to dive in,” Lewis recalls. His first step into the racing world came aboard a Honda CB500 in the 2020 freshman championship. Though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the season, he quickly made his mark, finishing third overall and claiming several wins. That early success ignited a dream.

The Climb to Recognition

Determination became the driving force behind Lewis’s progression. Each year from 2020 to 2024 was a stepping stone, building toward something greater. In 2021, he advanced to the Sportsman Championship and earned podium finishes. Late that year, he took on a wildcard round in the British Superbikes Junior Super Sport class. The experience was eye-opening, exposing him to tougher competition and a higher level of racing.

The following year brought both triumphs and challenges. Balancing his CB500 races with competing in Junior Super Sport, Lewis claimed the Sportsman Championship title but struggled to find similar success in the more competitive class. “I finished in the 20s, which was tough after tasting success in other classes,” he admits. Still, the lessons learned proved invaluable.

By 2023, everything began to click. With renewed confidence and rigorous training, Lewis achieved his first Junior Super Sport podium mid-season and ended the year with a win. This momentum carried him into 2024, where he transitioned to the powerful Kawasaki ZX4 RR. It was an all-or-nothing season, and Lewis delivered, earning consistent wins and podiums and finishing third in the championship—a performance that caught the attention of Triumph for the 2025 season.

Rising Above Setbacks

Racing isn’t just about victories; it’s also about resilience. Lewis has faced his share of setbacks, including crashes and mechanical issues. “When things go wrong, I focus on coming back stronger,” he says. In 2024, two crashes dented his lead, but instead of dwelling on the losses, he worked closely with his team to rebuild and reset mentally.

The Work Behind the Wins

Success on the track comes from hard work behind the scenes. Lewis balances his full-time job as an electrician with an intense training schedule. “After work, I hit the gym five days a week,” he shares. Fitness and nutrition are crucial, and his family plays a supportive role, with his mother preparing his meals to keep him fueled for peak performance.

Beyond physical preparation, Lewis spends hours analyzing race data, tweaking setups, and planning for upcoming events. “Every detail matters,” he emphasizes, underscoring the relentless effort required to stay competitive.

A Dream Ride

When asked to imagine his dream race, Lewis lights up. “The Yamaha R1 at Mugello in Italy,” he says without hesitation. “The mix of speed, history, and scenery—it would be a dream come true.”

The Road Ahead

The 2025 season marks a new chapter for Lewis. Being approached by Triumph was a monumental moment, affirming his potential and hard work. This year, his sights are set on consistent podium finishes and ultimately, the championship title. Looking further ahead, his dream is to compete in British Superbikes.

For aspiring racers, Lewis has simple but powerful advice: “Stick with it, even when it gets tough. Hard work and perseverance can turn things around. If someone else can do it, so can you.”

As Lewis gears up for what promises to be an incredible year, he invites fans and sponsors to join him on this journey. Follow his Instagram and Facebook channels, come to the races, and spread the word. Every bit of support, whether financial or just cheering him on, makes a difference. 2025 is going to be an incredible ride.

The BMIC thanks Lewis for this uplifting story and is proud to be part of his support team. Go Lewis!
